Tractatus (June 2021)
for any number of sustaining instruments, to be recorded asynchronously, or performed live
Sometimes, the deeper you dig into an elemental aspect of music, the richer and more varied the output. This graphic score, written for the ensemble Neither/Nor, asks players to asynchronously record nuanced individual sonic materials to be fully shaped and composed in the editing stage. It can also be performed live with a strong improvisers and rehearsal time.
Inspired by Wittgenstein’s groundbreaking first opus, this music starts with a basic, single sustaining note, and works its way through various open form approaches to interpreting short graphic score gestures.
Tractatus was written for Neither/Nor during the pandemic and beautifully performed by five of its members, Marie Blix, voice, Rebekah Novinger, accordion, Adrienne Schoenfeld, contrabass, Len Tetta, electric guitar, and Davide Campobianco, electronics. Recording was released by Neither/Nor in November 2021.
Graphic score is available from the composer upon request.
